The launch of the African Union (AU) in South Africa in July, replacing the 39-year-old Organisation of African Unity (OAU), has given a fresh impetus to Africa’s development agenda. The historic event is a culmination of the aspirations expressed 40 years ago by Africa’s founding fathers and visionaries such as Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and Julius yerere of Tanzania.
