SOUTHERN AFRICA took another step towards regional integration this year, with achievements as well as challenges in trade integration, energy, conservation, and gender equality. The main indicator of trade integration was the formal launch of negotiations by SADC, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC) to establish an integrated market covering 26 countries, half of Africa.
